Canvas is the most common, but wood, masonite, and many others are also used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pick your colors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose only a few colors, mixing them for countless shades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Buy basic brushes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buy a few basic brushes: a large gesso brush to prepare canvas, a fine round brush for detailed work, and a flat inch-wide brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Splurge for better brushes. Cheap ones tend to shed hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prepare the canvas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare your surface with gesso to make it smooth. Apply an even layer and let it dry. Lightly sand and repeat until your desired smoothness is achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use a medium to dilute acrylic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a medium, such as a gel retarder or gesso primer, and water to dilute acrylic paint. It will help prevent cracking, and your painting will last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mediums also add texture to your acrylics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Add to your collection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add a palette knife, fan brush, and other tools to your collection to create your personal style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know?
